My most recent titles are Unatural Instinct (hardcover), Blind Instinct (hard/soft), Bitter Instinct (hard/soft in April), Cold Edge, Double Edge, and Cutting Edge (all paper), and due this Fall -- Final Edge. I found myself struggling with an attempt to write YA historical fiction of the coming of age variety I so loved--Huck Finn, et. Bob Walker New I believe anyone writing and wishing to publish in the NYC marketplace should sit down and write a mystery, as mystery teaches more about plot & plotting than any other category of fiction. I am also now reading the strange tale of Elmer McCurdy--history of an American outlaw. Bob Walker New This only came clear to me after doing my own first Mystery-suspense novel intended as a spoof but published as a "straight forward" and unapologetic action-adventure, Sub-Zero (about how much I made on the deal). Most recently, my novel Unnatural Instinct won teh Readers Choice Award (a hefty marble statue) for best suspense novel of 2002 at the Love Is Murder Readers and Writers Conference in Oak Brook, Illionis, sponsored by the College of Dupage. Bob Walker New I have won a teaching excellence award from Bethune-Cookman College, a couple of writing awards from the Florida Freelance Writers Association for fiction and non-fiction, and I've seen many of my books printed in Chech, Polish, Japanese, and "British English" editions. This didn't happen until I wrote a straight "spoofy" mystery/suspense, and that process I recommend to anyone who wants to write--plot a mystery! It teaches more about writing in quick time than any other genre can. Bob Walker New While born in Corinth, Mississippi, I grew up in Chicago, IL. I was drawn to stories and films having to do with the unusual, the arcane, the bizarre and curious from Ripley's Believe it or Not to Twilight Zone to Science Fiction Theater (that dates me) and the hugely entertaining One Step Beyond which purported to deal with "true stories" of the strange--and they were strange. Bob Walker New My greatest influences have been too many to list, but I'll give you the top of the list: Shakespeare, Mark Twain, Alexander Dumas, Martin Cruz Smith, Thomas Thompson, Robert Bloch, Richard Matheson, and more recently Patricia Cornwell, the person who finally unmasked Jack the Ripper (cudos to her!). But the best reward--other than good sales--for me has to be seeing students succeed and grow and sometimes go on to publication.
